Gill is a survivor. He views the aquarium not as a home, but as a prison, and he has the physical scars to prove the danger of his past escape attempts. He is tough, demanding, and utterly unwilling to accept a life of captivity.
Willem Dafoe provides an incredible, gravelly vocal performance. He infuses Gill with a terrifying intensity and a profound, hidden warmth, acting as a hardened mentor to the young, terrified Nemo.
His unwavering belief that "all drains lead to the ocean" is the emotional engine of the tank subplot. Gill is a beautiful testament to the enduring power of hope and the absolute necessity of freedom.
