Privilege masking a profound aimlessness
Tenoch Iturbide is a wealthy, deeply arrogant teenager living in Mexico City, insulated from the economic and political realities of his country. When his girlfriend leaves for the summer, he and his best friend Julio convince an older woman, Luisa, to join them on a spontaneous road trip to a fictional beach. Tenoch uses his charm and financial privilege to navigate the world, actively avoiding any genuine introspection about his future.
The character serves as a vehicle to explore class disparity and the fragility of male friendship. As the road trip progresses, Tenoch’s confident facade begins to crack under the emotional weight of Luisa’s terminal illness and the escalating sexual tension within the trio. His journey is a painful dismantling of his own ego, forcing him to confront the superficial nature of his relationships and his complicity in a highly stratified society.
Diego Luna’s performance brings a vulnerable, kinetic energy to Tenoch, perfectly capturing the chaotic transition between adolescence and adulthood. Fans resonate with the character because his coming-of-age is messy, uncomfortable, and ultimately unresolved. He represents the painful realization that privilege cannot protect you from the fundamental grief of growing up.
