Tegan Jovanka never wanted to travel in time; she just wanted to get to her first day of work at Heathrow Airport. She is abrasive, deeply suspicious of the Doctor’s chaotic plans, and completely unafraid to speak her mind to terrifying alien warlords.
Janet Fielding played Tegan with a brilliant, aggressive energy. She provided a much-needed dose of grounded, cynical realism to the TARDIS crew, constantly questioning the logic and the safety of their adventures.
Her eventual, heartbreaking departure defined the emotional stakes of the Fifth Doctor’s era. Tegan proves that you don’t need to be an idealized hero to be brave; sometimes, you just need to be really, really angry.
