A guardian who treats adulthood as an art project
Spencer Shay is Carly's older brother, legal guardian and an artist whose sculptures fill their Seattle apartment. He grants unusual freedom while remaining available when the web show creates trouble. Domestic life follows his inventive but unreliable logic.
Spencer rarely solves a problem through conventional planning. His projects can cause the emergency, yet his loyalty gives Carly a stable place to return. Guardianship works because affection survives mistakes that would overwhelm a stricter household.
Jerry Trainor commits his whole body to Spencer's sudden turns and elaborate panic. The physical comedy gives younger characters space to drive their own stories. His warmth stops the performance from reducing Spencer to uncontrolled energy.
