The only man who saw the monster
James Doakes operates purely on instinct. He is a former special forces operative who doesn’t care about blood spatter analysis; he looks into Dexter Morgan’s eyes and instantly recognizes the cold, empty stare of a killer.
Erik King delivers a brilliant, high-voltage performance. He is intensely confrontational and endlessly quotable, acting as a constantly looming, terrifying threat to Dexter’s carefully constructed secret life.
His tragic fate is one of the darkest moments in the series. Doakes is a fascinating subversion of the "antagonist" trope, a genuinely good, if aggressive, cop who is destroyed simply because he was right.
