A legacy built on a single kick
Johnny Lawrence begins the Cobra Kai series as a man entirely out of time. Decades after losing the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament to Daniel LaRusso, Johnny is working dead-end jobs, drinking heavily, and clinging to 1980s rock music. He approaches modern sensibilities with baffled hostility, using his aggressive "strike first" philosophy to mask a deep well of self-loathing and profound regret over his failures as a father to his son, Robby.
Desperate for purpose, Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai dojo, teaching a new generation of bullied teenagers to weaponize their anger. The series succeeds by shifting the narrative perspective to the former villain, detailing Johnny’s messy, non-linear path to redemption. He slowly realizes that the ruthless teachings that made him a teenage champion also ruined his adult life, forcing him to painfully unlearn a lifetime of toxic behavior to properly guide his students.
William Zabka plays Johnny with remarkable comedic timing and surprising emotional depth. Fans resonate with Johnny because his struggle is intensely relatable; he is a deeply flawed man trying to navigate a world that passed him by. His evolving relationship with his former rival and his surrogate son, Miguel, provides the emotional core of the franchise, proving that it is never too late to rewrite your own history.
