Joel Miller is a survivor of a fungal pandemic that has shattered the United States. Years after losing his daughter, he works as a smuggler in a Boston quarantine zone and keeps emotion at a distance. A mission to escort Ellie across the country forces him into a responsibility he does not want.
The journey tests Joel's belief that survival requires emotional withdrawal. Ellie becomes a reminder of the life he lost, but also a person with her own choices and fears. His need to protect her drives the story toward decisions that blur care, control, and moral responsibility.
Pedro Pascal plays Joel with restraint, letting silence and small reactions carry much of his grief. He makes the character's violence feel tied to a fear of losing another child rather than simple toughness. Fans connect with Joel because his love is sincere even when the choices it produces are hard to defend.
