A life divided by the Ring
Andy Serkis combines voice, facial performance and full-body movement to make the division visible before either personality speaks. The crouched shape suggests damage; flashes of humour and need keep the character from becoming only a monster.
For Frodo, Gollum is guide, threat and warning. Their shared burden creates sympathy without trust. The tragedy is not that Sméagol lacks a path back, but that every moment of connection must compete with the object that has defined him for generations.
