Five centuries of science applied to protecting the world from itself
Helen Magnus was born in Victorian London and altered her own aging through science. By the time Sanctuary begins, she has been running her network of protective facilities for abnormal beings for over a century. Her knowledge base extends across eras that no other character can access.
Magnus treats the protection of abnormals as both a moral duty and a practical problem. She negotiates with governments, manages volatile residents and deals with a daughter whose existence was itself an experiment. The organisation she built was always more fragile than its global reach suggested.
Amanda Tapping plays Magnus with authority that rests on accumulated experience rather than rank. The character does not seek approval from the institutions she works alongside. She built something they needed before they understood they needed it, and she remembers the world before they arrived.
Sanctuary began as a web series before moving to Syfy. Magnus therefore found a dedicated audience outside a conventional broadcast launch. Her genre and convention following continues to build on both the performance and the character's scope.
