He believes authorship grants moral authority over his subject. When Truman begins testing the town's limits, Christof answers curiosity with manufactured fear and physical danger. His final appeal reveals that he understands Truman's needs while still denying him the right to choose.
Ed Harris plays Christof with quiet certainty instead of obvious malice. His careful touch on the broadcast image suggests genuine attachment distorted by ownership. Viewers can hear the language of protective parenting while watching a producer defend permanent surveillance.
