High school is hell, but the graveyard is worse
Sarah Michelle Gellar gives Buffy the Vampire Slayer its heart, combining Valley Girl dialogue with the weary responsibility of a seasoned soldier. Buffy resents her calling but refuses to abandon it, treating her supernatural duty as the ultimate, exhausting extracurricular activity.
The series uses monsters to literalise the anxieties of adolescence and early adulthood. Buffy survives because she breaks the traditional Slayer isolation, leaning on her friends—the Scooby Gang—to share a burden that was designed to break her alone.
