The conscience behind the mission
Alfred Pennyworth manages Wayne Manor and serves as Bruce Wayne's guardian after the murder of Bruce's parents. His military and intelligence experience makes him more than a domestic caretaker. He supports investigations while questioning the damage caused by Bruce's isolation.
Alfred cannot command Batman to stop, so he works through evidence, medical care, and uncomfortable truth. Their conflict comes from different ideas of protection rather than a lack of loyalty. He preserves a home for somebody who has built his identity around never feeling safe.
Andy Serkis gives Alfred a practical directness that resists sentimental speeches. Strain appears in the pauses between him and Bruce, where years of failed communication remain visible. Viewers understand Alfred as family because he continues the argument instead of simply obeying.
